Welcome to ‘Oligarchy Monopoly’- the 0.1%’s favorite pastime!
As a bonus for all of you ‘Birds in a Gilded Age’, the following version of the famous ‘Monopoly’ board game rules may be played with any Monopoly set.
In the interest of reflecting the actual economy and social structure of the early 21st Century, these modified and additional rules have been provided, as well as updated parameters. Try to enjoy it! Just try!
Starting the Game
Players roll for class status and choose their tokens, which establishes the starting and salary money for each player.
The highest roll is the ‘Oligarch’, who gets first dibs on the racecar.
Each lower roll gets the next level down in money and salary. Players choose a token from those remaining in order of their rolls, with the lowest roll choosing last. The second highest roll after the ‘Oligarch’, is ‘White Collar’, followed by ‘Blue Collar, then ‘Immigrant/Minority’, and finally, ‘Female’.
In games of more than five players, the two highest are oligarch and white collar, the lowest rolls are immigrant and female, and the rest in between are blue collar. Ties for class must be rolled off between players unless they would both be blue collar anyway.
All players must have one of these randomly assigned class values. Players may not choose a class, nor roll again for class unless rolling off a tie.
The players start the game with the following amounts of money;
Start amount / Salary amount (when passing ‘go’)
Oligarch $ 2,000,000 / $ 500,000
White Collar $ 1,500 / $ 200
Blue Collar(s) $ 1,350 / $ 180
Immigrant/Minority $ 1,200 / $ 160
Female $ 1,050 / $ 140
Additional Rules
The Oligarch automatically owns all the utilities and railroads, and is also the banker, and may borrow unlimited amounts of money, interest free, at will.
The Oligarch may immediately buy and mortgage properties before the roll to determine order.
The Oligarch may buy properties during other player’s turns, and is not required to land on a property to buy it.
Oligarch shall also be immune to tax and jail spaces and cards.
The Oligarch may sell or rent properties to other players for negotiated price, which may exceed the listed price for the property.
Oligarch may also, at any time, claim ‘eminent domain’, and build on another’s property, and charge them rent.
The ‘Bank Dividend’ Chance Card and the 9 Community Chest Cards that pay money to players now only apply to the Oligarch.
The rest of the players are strictly bound by the traditional rules in all other cases.
Playing the Game
After choosing their class, and when the Oligarch finishes buying up everything, the players then roll for order of play. The oligarch goes first regardless of the roll. The rest of the players go in order of class, as the roll is largely just symbolic, and in actuality will only establish the playing order of multiple blue collar players among each other.
The players roll the die in order and move the displayed number of spaces, obeying the instructions on each space where they land. In the unlikely event of landing on an un-purchased space, the player may buy it.
If a player lands on a controlled space, he must pay rent and may not install cable/wifi.
If a player rolls doubles, the Oligarch gets another turn.
Ending the Game
The first player to reach $2,000,000 wins.
As the Oligarch has already won at the start, the game plays on to see how much more she/he can gain from the other players, anyway.
Game time- until all the other players run out of money or the Oligarch wants to quit.
